To all Ge.tt users!
Today marks a big day for us. We are making some changes to Ge.tt's free service in response to feedback from users, and adding a new, low-cost premium service to make the company sustainable.
For most users, this will simply mean an improvement. Until now, files have been stored by Ge.tt for up to 90 days if you register for an account, and 30 days if you don't.
From now on, your files will now be stored for as long as you have an account.
Many users told us that they wanted files hosted for longer, so we feel this is a big improvement.
Of course, it might sound a bit too good to be true. There is obviously a cost to storing data and running Ge.tt, especially now that we have more than 330,000 users.
We have thought long and hard about how to offer free file sharing, while making the company sustainable.
We have therefore introduced storage limits. Without an account you get 250MB. By spending a few seconds to create an account, users receive 2GB of free storage, which is high enough that most people won't be affected, and a premium service where large users pay a very small fee for more storage.
Most users of Ge.tt use less than 2GB, so will simply enjoy an improved, free service with long-term storage. And as a goodwill gesture, existing users get an extra 1GB of storage.
But users who want more storage, such as professional users or people with large file requirements, will pay small, tiered fees. For $5 a month they get 5GB, for $10 they get 40GB and for $20 they get 100GB.
These charges are almost insignificant to big users such as companies, but will collectively ensure that we continue to offer free file sharing, and keep improving the service. We feel they offer great value, and a good solution.
As ever, we remain very focussed on ensuring that our file-sharing service is outstanding for our users.
We always welcome feedback, and hope they understand the changes, and why we have made them. Because we are a small company, but now have lots of users, we can't reply to everyone, but we do read every email we receive. If you'd like to give us feedback or have questions, write to: feedback@ge.tt
Kind regards,
Mathias and Tobias,
The Ge.tt founders
